The purpose of the NA Regulatory Trade Manager role is to be the primary regional contact point for R&D, factory, and laboratory import and export activities. This role will be responsible for ensuring compliance with all U.S. and Canadian government laws and regulations concerning phytosanitary and health certificate requirements and ensuring business processes associated with cross-border movements function smoothly.

The Regulatory Trade Manager, part of the NA Regulatory Team, is responsible to ensure trade facilitation and innovation deployment at and from NA factories, enables portfolio expansion and contributes to shape the best route to market sourcing strategy. They belong to a community of Royal Canin Regulatory Affairs associates promoting best practice sharing, establishing and auditing standards, processes, systems, and the consistent application of Mars Petcare and Royal Canin policies that ensure regulatory compliance.

What are we looking for?

  • Bachelor's degree in a technical area, such as food science, veterinary medicine, food safety, chemistry, toxicology, nutrition, or other biological science.
  • A minimum of 2 years of Import/Export or Regulatory Affairs experience in Canada is mandatory. Experience in the US is highly preferred.
  • Solid knowledge of Pet food phytosanitary compliance.  
  • Excellent understanding, working knowledge, and ability to communicate complexity of import and export requirements.
  • Ability to solve complex regulatory and scientific challenges with appropriate data.
  • Experience of representing companies in the trade associations and working with government officials.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% of the time (US and Canada).

What will be your key responsibilities?

  • Lead import/export needs for Royal Canin NA factories, laboratories, and research facilities - activities may include, but are not limited to, assessing of and advising on import/export law and regulations, standardizing permit language, applying for permits, maintenance of records, and phytosanitary compliance.
  • Acts as a primary regulatory partner in the projects aimed at opening of the new trade lanes from NA factories. Details scenarios, provides Regulatory Risk Assessments, develops engagement strategies for the external stakeholders and authorities.
  • Ensure factory facilities and warehouses are prepared for government audits related to the maintenance of trade lanes. Primary point of contact for NA regulatory relationship with USDA and CFIA.
  • Manage NA laboratory and research import and export record retention requirements, ensuring compliance with import / export phytosanitary laws and regulations.
  • Develop and implement effective working relationship with key internal and external stakeholders, including but not limited to import and export control agencies, relevant local government contacts, and laboratory, research, supply chain, and commercial associates to ensure compliance with governmental laws and regulations and to facilitate trade initiatives.
  • Implement business procedures, best practices and internal controls necessary to minimize business and legal risk, including creation of SOP's and documented procedures.
  • Audit internal operations, procedures, and documentations to verify and ensure phytosanitary compliance.
  • Identify and champion continuous improvement projects directly related to the laboratory import / export process.
  • Train regional laboratory, factory, and supply associates on phytosanitary and health certificate compliance processes.
  • Develops scenarios for the alternative supply solutions in case of sanitary crisis or supply capacity issues.
  • Represent Royal Canin with government officials on phytosanitary compliance-related topics.
  • Other duties and responsibilities as defined.
